Responsibilities & Activities

Urban Preservation Foundation is responsible for the management and oversight of the historic preservation of buildings and conservation easements to ensure historic facades remain preserved and maintained. UPF also provides management consultation services to other real estate organizations and entities to encourage and guide historic preservation efforts.

In addition, Urban Preservation Foundation has been involved in the development of several properties. UPF’s most recent project was the management, development and construction of San Francisco’s, newest outdoor public space, Mint Plaza. Mint Plaza is the first-ever voluntary downtown street-to-plaza conversion completed by a developer in San Francisco, and the first ever in California to use Mello-Roos Community Facility District (CFD) financing solely to create an urban pedestrian space. Mint Plaza is also adjacent to the Landmark status, Old U.S. Mint and several other historically significant buildings. UPF played an integral role in ensuring that Mint Plaza would be developed sensitively and involve all community stakeholders throughout the process. The end result was a unique urban space created for the benefit of the surrounding neighborhood and city at large.

Urban Preservation Foundation has also been the co-applicant on two recent Infill Infrastructure Grants administered by California Housing and Community Development. These grants will help build the infrastructure for two urban infill developments located at 178 Townsend and 2235 Third Street in San Francisco. Both of the projects are mixed-income, 20% of the units are designated as affordable and historic structures are located on-site. UPF continues to be active in the development of both projects.
